Essential Reading and Reference Materials

Primary Texts

The traditional scriptures that document the practice:

Damar Tantra

The primary source for Shivambu practice. Contains the Shivambu Kalpa Vidhi — 107 verses of instruction from Lord Shiva to Parvati. Available in various translations; the Ram Kumar Rai edition includes Sanskrit with English translation.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika

The 15th-century yogic text by Swami Swatmarama. Contains references to Amaroli (Chapter 3, verses 94-96) as one of the three mudras for sublimating sexual energy. Available in many translations; the Bihar School of Yoga edition is comprehensive.

Shiva Samhita

Another important yogic text that discusses Vajroli, Sahajoli, and Amaroli mudras as "the secret of all secrets."

Foundational Modern Books

"The Water of Life: A Treatise on Urine Therapy"

John W. Armstrong, 1944

The foundational text for urine therapy in the West. Armstrong documents his own cure from tuberculosis and describes the treatment of numerous patients. Written after 26 years of practice and observation. Essential reading for anyone serious about the practice.

"The Golden Fountain: The Complete Guide to Urine Therapy"

Coen van der Kroon, 1993

Perhaps the most comprehensive modern guide. Van der Kroon draws on both Eastern and Western sources, includes scientific analysis, and provides practical guidance. Written by someone who came to the practice through direct experience.

"Your Own Perfect Medicine"

Martha Christy, 1996

Focuses on the scientific aspects — the compounds in urine, research on individual components, and medical applications. Useful for understanding the biochemistry.

"Manav Mootra" (Human Urine)

Dr. R.M. Patel, 1959

A classic work from the Indian perspective. Dr. Patel was an Ayurvedic physician who documented extensive case studies. Originally in Gujarati, available in English translation.

"Shivambu Geeta"

Dr. G.K. Thakkar

An accessible introduction to the practice with commentary on the Damar Tantra verses. Good for beginners approaching from the Hindu/Ayurvedic perspective.

A Note on Sources

Much content about urine therapy online is either dismissive (written by skeptics who haven't studied the tradition) or uncritical (making exaggerated claims). We recommend:

  • Starting with the primary texts (Damar Tantra, Hatha Yoga Pradipika)
  • Reading the foundational books (Armstrong, van der Kroon)
  • Approaching modern sources with discernment
  • Prioritizing direct experience over secondhand claims
